Local Labour Councillors kicked off the New Year by writing to Post Office Minister Gareth Thomas MP about preserving Post Office Services in Bexhill.

The Chair of Post Office Ltd, Nigel Railton, announced in November that there will be a review of the 115 Directly Managed branches of the Post Office including Bexhill’s main post office in Devonshire Square. The letter sets out why it’s important to keep the full range of Post Office services currently being delivered at Devonshire Square; services from buying Postal Orders and stamps to applying for a Passport or Driving Licence.

Cllr Christine Bayliss – Leader of the Labour Group on Rother and Cabinet member for economic development, said ‘Our local businesses rely on the local post office for banking their takings, posting parcels and more. We must keep the full range of services and not end up with a counter at the back of a Town Centre shop selling stamps and postal orders.

Cllr Gareth Delany – Rother Councillor for St Michaels and Pebsham said ‘We don’t have Post Office facilities in East Bexhill so people rely on the Devonshire Square Post Office for the full range of services they offer. To lose those services would be devastating for a lot of people especially those who can’t access online services.

Cllr Mark Legg – Old Town Councillor and Trade Union activist said  ’Any closure of the main Post Office would pose a serious risk to the livelihoods of our local dedicated post office workers who face the possibility of job losses and the financial insecurity that comes with it’.
